5th October 2025

What a windy day today and after the wind, rain and dismal Saturday, I didn’t expect so many folks to come out of their cosy homes, but they did.

Scores were low as the wind made the flight tricky with both direction and speed changing by the second but everyone said they had quite enjoyed the challenge.

The washing up was never-ending as so many cuppa’s were needed and the shoot was a

bit late starting as everyone was doing so much chatting outside the cabin. Some shoots were closed today because of the weather but we are tough at Flying Black 9! Two of the farmers' cows went missing today but one of our shooters found them and they were returned to the herd. They had not managed to get down to the road thank goodness. They were very friendly cows and allowed their faces to be scratched, not every cow allows that.

The next shoot will be the Battle of Trafalgar, which was started some years ago after a member who is ex-Royal Navy said this important day in our history didn’t get a proper mention.

The John Midgley Cup will also be presented to the member who has most improved his or her average score this last year. John Midgley was the farmer who rescued us when we had to leave Manywells on very short notice because of the new houses being built there. I asked if he had anywhere we could store our containers till we found a new ground and he gave us permission to shoot on his land. When John died his son gave us the cup for presentation each year in John’s memory.

We will also be having the usual raffle on that day.

From now on, second-round scores will be added to the score sheet for working out averages, so will now count. There will also soon be an average sheet posted on the notice board of visitors scores and averages. This was requested by one of our shooters and we are always willing to give things a go if we can.
