Some history from our archives

I think that we all know that our club has been running for a very long time.

Sorting out my desk I unexpectedly found a newspaper cutting which is not in very good condition unfortunately. It is of FB9 members presenting the Headmaster of Cullingworth Primary School with a cheque. From information on the reverse of the cutting I think the year would be 2001.

The names of the club members in the photo are Leslie Smith, Ken Harker, David Hollins, Doug Shrimpton, Duncan Barker, Frank Morris and Gilbert Beveridge.

The club was based at Manywells at that time and so a donation was given each year to support something in the village. That particular year it was to give some children from the school the chance to go on a trip.

I have never been able to find out when the club first started but I know the first shoots were held behind the Quarry House Pub before moving to Manywells, and then to Foreside Top in Denholme.

One of the original members was Greek and the word Oplo is a Greek word. Should anyone know more of our clubs history I would be glad to hear and record it.
